Inaugurated in 2014, New Works Now presents fully rehearsed staged readings of works new to the American theater. The Last Queen of Canaan is a haunting new musical about the descendants of slavery living in depression era Virginia. Ginny is dreaming of a better life in Richmond with the man she has loved from childhood, but is afraid to leave her Grandmother, Cora. When a young white woman from the WPA arrives to record Cora's stories, the past emerges to stake its claim on the present, and everyone must fight to escape its clutches.
