Revels Kids- Lyme
Revels Kids explores the arts and culture of Zimbabwe!
Revels Kids is going on a trip through the arts and culture of Zimbabwe!
Zimbabwe has a rich and sophisticated tradition of musical and artistic expression inspired by everyday experiences. Of course, daily life in a country with lions and elephants, majestic ruins, and the world’s largest waterfall is bound to be interesting!
Join us as we immerse ourselves in the exciting rhythms and tunes of the Shona and Nbedele people. We’ll find out what kind of music we might hear walking to school, riding the train, or visiting the beautiful countryside of this African nation. We’ll listen to ancient stories from the days of Great Zimbabwe, learn how villagers turn their own houses into works of art, and try out an mbira, or thumb piano.
Helping guide us on our journey will be mbira play and ambassador of Shona culture, Solomon Murungu.
Solomon Murungu
Mr. Murungu was was born and raised in Makoni district in eastern Zimbabwe, emigrating to the United States in 1973. He was advisor to the 1999 Houston International Festival and has participated in the Boston and Vermont International Festivals since 1997. In addition to presenting and lecturing at schools and universities throughout North America, Solomon has been contributor to the WGBH’s Sound and Spirit radio program, and was featured artist for the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’s unveiling of the Teel collection of African art in April 2004.
Mr. Murungu’s work has expanded into an organization, Zambuko Projects Unlimited, through which he has traveled throughout the region promoting cross-cultural exploration through presentations on mbira music and Shona culture.
