4 Places To Camp In The Upper Valley

Jul 21, 2015 12:57PM ● By Victoria Pipas
Camping in the woods with tents, lanterns, sleeping bags, and s’mores supplies is a summertime ritual. But it doesn’t have to mean a long drive away from the Upper Valley. In fact, some of the quaintest camping areas can be found in our neck of the woods. Read on to find the best destination for your summertime adventure.

Storrs Pond Recreation Area: This facility owned and operated by the Hanover Improvement Society is an ideal spot for daily excursions and for overnight adventures. The pool and pond offer ample swimming opportunities. Also easily accessible are tennis courts, trails for hiking and running, and canoes and paddleboards for rent. The site is a bustle of activity during the summer, with daily events including summer camps, swim and tennis lessons, beach boot camp, fishing, and trail races. If you prefer a quieter retreat, just come in the evening after the pool closes at 7pm for a night or two at one of the campsites. You can make camp in your RV or tent and enjoy access to the swimming and trail facilities at the site, as well as bathrooms with hot showers. Make reservations for these wooded campsites in advance, as their numbers are limited. For more information on camping at this rustic campground, visit the website or call (603) 643-2134.

Quechee/Pine Valley KOA Campground: If you prefer to leave the tents at home in favor of cabins, you might enjoy this luxury campground and all its amenities. Cute cabins range in size from one room to deluxe cabins that sleep up to six people. If you would rather rough it, you can stay in one of their well-maintained tent sites, which offer water hookups, electricity, and nearby bathrooms. That way, you get the best of both worlds—the modern amenities and the woodsy setting. This KOA campground also provides access to a heated swimming pool, a trout pond for fishing and canoeing, and bike rentals. This is certainly one of the less rustic campgrounds, even providing Wi-Fi, so those wishing to totally disconnect may wish to look elsewhere for their escape. The campground is located at 3700 Woodstock Road in White River Junction, Vermont. For more information, call (802) 296-6711.

Four Springs Farm: This hybrid farm, campground, and learning center offers a great opportunity for your family to support local agri-tourism right in Royalton, Vermont. Small cabins range from $30 to $50 per night, while access to tent sites and the picnic pavilion is even less. Four Springs Farm is unique in that your family members can participate in daily farm activities while you relax under a forested pavilion. Participants can help with morning chores, pick their own vegetables, and explore the many fields and streams of the farm property. From the farmstand, enjoy baked goods, homemade jams and jellies, pickled vegetables, eggs, and more. You can even purchase supplies to cook at your campsite. Visit the website for more information and reservation booking.

Rest n' Nest Campground: Also known as “The Campground with Elbow Room,” this site on 20 acres of forest in East Thetford is a true escape from the bustle of daily life. Children can enjoy swimming in the pool or ponds, or playing horseshoes or jungle gym. Individual campsites are spacious, with most people parking their RVs in the sites for short vacations. There is also a long list of summer activities hosted by the site throughout the summer, including bingo, arts and crafts, hayrides, and scavenger hunts. You can find more information here, or by calling (802) 785-2997.
