Norwich Historical Society’s 12th Annual Norwich Antiques Show: Step Back in Time

Sep 07, 2016 04:58PM ● By Kirsten Gehlbach
The Norwich Historical Society holds its 12th Annual Norwich Antiques Show on Saturday, September 10, from 10am to 4pm at Lewis House, 277 Main Street in Norwich.

This event is heralded as a fine show, with quality dealers from around the region and the historical society’s own booth of antiques and collectibles donated by the community. Spencer-Julian Antiques of Norwich coordinates and hosts the show. Bill Smith of William A. Smith Auctioneers and Appraisers of Plainfield donates the big tent. He also offers informal appraisals of antique items from 2 to 4pm ($5 per item, with a limit of three items).

This event is one of the historical society’s biggest annual fundraisers, and the money raised goes to support program activities and to continue to maintain Lewis House as a community museum and meeting place.

This year’s raffle prizes include a lovely antique tray decorated with an original stencil of horses, hounds, and a fox; one hour of free consultation with Mary Jane Clark, Art Care & Appraisals; and a $100 gift certificate to the Norwich Inn. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. This event takes place rain or shine. Admission is $5.00 (with children 12 and under free).

On Sunday, September 11, from
2 to 4pm, the society will bid farewell to Judy Brown, who has served as director for five years, and will welcome Sarah Rooker as the new director. The community is invited to the reception.

Judy Brown, known as a gracious and capable director for five years, is leaving the post after the Antiques Show. Her contributions to the organization are far too numerous to recount. The board will introduce Sarah Rooker, who will be taking the reins as director. She brings to this post over 20 years of experience in museum administration and history education. Throughout her career, she has worked to connect communities to their heritage.

Sarah notes, “Over and over again, I have seen how local history can bring communities together, bridging generations, strengthening organizations, and supporting the economy.”
