Zumba

And move to the music

Spring is here—time to shape up! Before you groan in anticipation of yet another exercise class or gym workout, think Zumba®—the fun and contagious aerobic dance class with the motto “ditch the workout; join the party.” Zumba is sweeping the nation with its blend of high-energy Latin and international music plus easy-to-learn, exhilarating dance moves. Zumba (Spanish slang for “buzz like a bee”) incorporates dance moves from salsa, merengue, cha-cha, belly dancing, samba, hip-hop, and more. A typical class features repetition of four or five steps in one song, then moves on to other songs and rhythms. Participants move from one dance to another in increments, such as salsa for five minutes, hip-hop for five, then merengue for five. By the end of a session, you’ll have worked every major muscle group and achieved a cardio workout that ends with a relaxing stretch.

Zumba benefits not only the body but also the brain—learning new dance moves is great mental exercise. Zumba can boost metabolism for fat burning; increase cardiovascular fitness, stamina, and bone density; improve posture, flexibility, balance, and muscle tone; and lower blood pressure. It’s safe for a range of ages and fitness levels since the steps can be modified for a lower-impact workout, and all you need is a good pair of cross-trainers. The fusion of different dances and rhythms makes Zumba unique—and one exercise program you’ll be motivated to continue. You might even forget that you’re exercising.
